When you import a Nihon Ken from Japan, chances are (unless your dog is a KKA registered Kai) that you will be eligible to receive a JKC export pedigree. However, from the perspective of someone involved with the Japanese breeds, the JKC is not the club that I defer to. If you ever go to a JKC show, you will see what I mean. There are almost no Nihon Ken at these shows, and no disrespect to anyone showing Nihon Ken there, but a Nihon Ken with JKC show results, well it's not even close to a dog that has shown well in one of the breed specific clubs (like AKIHO or NIPPO), due to the low number of dogs shown, and their quality.

In regards to the judging, I am aware that everyone overseas is excited when a Japanese judge is present at an FCI show to judge the Nihon Ken. However, if you want to get a quality judgement of your dogs from a judge that specializes in the Japanese breeds and has years of experience in knowing what to look for, you'll want one of the judges from say AKIHO, NIPPO, KKA, HKH etc, and not a JKC judge. It's not a knock on the quality of the judges, but just a matter of experience. Then again, I know of breed specific judges that do not have a good eye for judging dogs, so I can't throw all the judges in the same basket.

  1. I co-own an AKC Bernese mt dog that lives in Japan with the other owner. What is the process to get her registered so she can participate in JKC shows? Is it even necessary to register her with JKC if she has AKC registration?

  2. can an AKC registered dog be bred to a JKC registered dog living in Japan? (Does JKC allow for a "foreign breeding"?) and will the offspring be eligible for JKC and AKC registration?

    1. Unless pups are born in Japan, offspring cannot be registered with the JKC.

    1. You could talk to the JKC or the Tosa Center. I'm not sure that either of them would have information for you however.
